Agriculture and Forestry

The agriculture industry is vital to our human existence which is why scientific research is so important for the proper development of successful and new ways of improving the agriculture sector. Organic grown fruits and vegetables which have become very popular in the last couple of years as important as they are mustn't shift our focus from the much bigger problem of world poverty. Without continual growth in agriculture, poverty will grow dramatically.

The Government's Involvement in Agriculture and Forestry

Agriculture and forestry in the United States are highly regulated. The creation of the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 1862 established the government's responsibility of making sure the needs of farmers and consumers are consistently met. The scope of the Department of Agriculture is very wide and is has since expanded to encompass many other areas apart from the control of farming, agriculture, and food. The Department also has international concerns and lists ending world hunger as a primary goal. There are many organizations within the Department of Agriculture that deal with agriculture in the United States. Perhaps the most well-known of these organizations is the Agricultural Marketing Service, or AMS. They have programs dealing with cotton, fruits and vegetables, dairy products, poultry, tobacco, and livestock and seeds. Each program has the responsibility of establishing standards and testing practices within the respective field. These testing practices include evaluating the quality of the product and identifying any pathogen threats. Most people will commonly recognize AMS as the group responsible for the USDA grading of beef and other products.

Another organization that works in tandem with the AMS is the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service operational unit of the Department of Agriculture, or APHIS. This mission statement of APHIS is “protecting and promoting U.S. agricultural health.” This includes the process of regulating organisms that have been genetically modified and to protect the country from foreign organisms that could cause potential problems. Between the AMS and APHIS group, agricultural concerns are effectively monitored and regulated.Forestry in the United States is also controlled by an arm of the Department of Agriculture. The United States Forest Service is officially responsible for a total of 193 million acres of land (approximately 9% of the total area of the United States) in various parts of the country. This organization was created in 1881 to aid in protecting certain areas of the country by preventing settlements and removing people who already lived there. The scope and responsibilities have changed greatly over the following years and now the Forest Service spends 42% or its $5.5 billion budget on fighting fires in national forests across the United States. Using a total of 34,250 employees, the agency defines its role in the country's forestry as the goal “to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the Nation's forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations.” In this manner, the Forest Service is the primary agency responsible for regulating forestry and resource extraction. To better achieve regulation and effective use of the lands, the Forest Service maintains five research stations to develop better methods of using the land and more productive regulation of unauthorized use. For regulation, a subdivision, the U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement
