North America North America (or America) is a continent which is part of America, located in the Northern Hemisphere, and almost entirely in the Western Hemisphere. Bounded on the north by the Arctic Ocean, east to the Atlantic Ocean, southeast to the Caribbean Sea and to the south and west by the Pacific Ocean. Is linked to South America by the narrow land bridge that is Central America. Covering an area of about 24,096,580 km ?, approximately 4.8% of the planet's surface. In 2009 its population is estimated at more than 448 million inhabitants. If you are considered as a continent, is the third in terms of area, after Asia and Africa, and fourth in population after Asia, Africa and Europe.Upon the arrival of Europeans, North America was populated by indigenous immigration from Asia through the Bering Strait.European colonization of North-chronological order: Spanish, French and English; consisted in the progressive advance from the east coast to the west. In general, this step leads to the marginalization and extermination of indigenous peoples, to confine the survivors on reservations located in the most unproductive and barren territory.
